Rick Strassman, M.D.

The first researcher in over 20 years to receive DEA and FDA approval to study psychedelics in humans, whose government-funded DMT clinical trials at the University of New Mexico (1990-1995) produced the most rigorous clinical documentation of entity encounters, alternate dimensions, and consciousness leaving the body — research he later connected to biblical prophecy through his "theoneurological" model.

Assessment: STRONG EVIDENCE

Rick Strassman conducted the most methodologically rigorous clinical investigation of DMT's effects on human consciousness ever performed. His double-blind, placebo-controlled, dose-response studies at the University of New Mexico administered approximately 400 doses of intravenous DMT to nearly 60 volunteers between 1990 and 1995. The research was funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and approved by the DEA and FDA — the first such approval for psychedelic research in the United States in over two decades. More than half of his volunteers independently reported encounters with intelligent nonhuman entities in what they described as hyper-real alternate dimensions with their own physics and geography. These findings were published in peer-reviewed journals including Archives of General Psychiatry and Biological Psychiatry, and later synthesized in his landmark book DMT: The Spirit Molecule (2000). The clinical rigor of the methodology — combined with the consistency and strangeness of the subjective reports — makes Strassman's work the strongest empirical foundation for the thesis that DMT enables access to something beyond ordinary neurological hallucination.

Background

Rick Strassman was born in Los Angeles to a Conservative Jewish family. He earned his undergraduate degree in biological sciences from Stanford University and his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. He completed his general psychiatry residency at UC Davis Medical Center and a clinical psychopharmacology research fellowship at UC San Diego.

Before his DMT research, Strassman established himself as a serious pineal gland researcher at the University of New Mexico. His melatonin research group documented the first known functional role of melatonin in humans — specifically, they demonstrated that melatonin mediates the normal trough in core body temperature observed between 3-4 a.m. This work involved developing an all-night bright-light melatonin suppression model and an exogenous melatonin infusion protocol. His expertise in pineal gland function would later inform his hypothesis that the pineal gland produces DMT under extraordinary physiological conditions such as birth, death, and near-death experiences.

Strassman practiced Soto Zen Buddhism for over 20 years (1974-1996), receiving lay ordination in a Western Zen order and leading a meditation group. His interest in Buddhism was sparked by visions he experienced during LSD use in the early 1970s. He has described this period as deeply formative for his understanding of altered states of consciousness, though he later became disillusioned with the Buddhist community's response to his psychedelic research — his Zen community pressured him to discontinue the DMT studies, contributing to his departure from the order.

At the University of New Mexico, Strassman attained the rank of tenured Associate Professor of Psychiatry and received the UNM General Clinical Research Center's Research Scientist Award before leaving the university in 1995.

The DMT Clinical Trials (1990-1995)

Regulatory Breakthrough

Strassman's achievement in obtaining DEA and FDA approval for human psychedelic research cannot be overstated. No researcher in the United States had received such approval in over 20 years, since the regulatory crackdown on psychedelic research in the early 1970s. The process required navigating the DEA's Schedule I restrictions, FDA safety requirements, and university ethics committees — a bureaucratic gauntlet that had effectively shut down an entire field of scientific inquiry for two decades.

Methodology

The studies used a double-blind, saline placebo-controlled, randomized design. DMT fumarate was administered intravenously at doses of 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.4 mg/kg to experienced hallucinogen users. Strassman chose intravenous administration for precision dosing and rapid onset (effects begin within seconds and peak within 2-5 minutes). He developed the Hallucinogen Rating Scale (HRS), a new clinical instrument for quantifying subjective psychedelic experiences across multiple dimensions including intensity, somaesthesia, affect, perception, cognition, and volition.

The research generated dose-response data for DMT's neuroendocrine, cardiovascular, autonomic, and subjective effects. A key finding was the lack of tolerance to DMT's psychological effects with repeated closely spaced doses — making DMT unique among classical psychedelics and suggesting a distinct pharmacological mechanism.

Published Papers

The clinical findings were published in peer-reviewed journals:

  • "Dose-response study of N,N-dimethyltryptamine in humans. II. Subjective effects and preliminary results of a new rating scale" — Archives of General Psychiatry, 1994

The Entity Encounters

The most extraordinary and unexpected finding of Strassman's research was the frequency and consistency of entity encounters reported by volunteers at high doses. More than half of the nearly 60 volunteers reported contact with intelligent nonhuman presences during their DMT sessions. Strassman was, by his own admission, unprepared for this:

"I was familiar with Terence McKenna's tales of the 'self-transforming machine elves' he encountered after smoking high doses of the drug... I admittedly chalked up these stories to some kind of West Coast eccentricity." — Rick Strassman, DMT: The Spirit Molecule, 2000

He was "neither intellectually nor emotionally prepared for the frequency with which contact with these beings occurred in our studies."

The entities described by volunteers fell into several recurring categories:

  • Guides and helpers — benevolent beings who welcomed the volunteer, communicated telepathically, and offered guidance or information
  • Alien/extraterrestrial beings — entities resembling classic "grey alien" descriptions, sometimes in what appeared to be technological environments
  • Mechanical or "elf-like" entities — the "machine elves" previously described by Terence McKenna, self-transforming beings in kaleidoscopic environments
  • Insectoid/mantis beings — large insect-like entities, often described as praying mantis-shaped, sometimes performing procedures on the volunteer
  • Clowns and jesters — playful, trickster-like entities
  • Reptilian humanoids — less frequent but reported by multiple volunteers

Volunteers consistently described these encounters as taking place in distinct alternate dimensions — spaces with their own physics, geometry, and architecture that felt "more real than real." Communication was typically telepathic. Some volunteers reported receiving "downloads" of information — complex data or messages transmitted instantaneously. Themes of death and rebirth, soul transit, and the fundamental nature of reality recurred across reports.

Critically, many volunteers — including experienced meditators and psychonauts — insisted that these experiences were qualitatively different from dreams, imagination, or ordinary hallucination. They described the DMT realm as an independent reality they were visiting, not a product of their own minds.

Why the Research Ended

The cessation of Strassman's DMT research in 1995 was driven by multiple factors:

  • Concern about lack of lasting benefit — Follow-up interviews one to two years after sessions found little positive carryover into volunteers' daily lives. Strassman worried he was not helping and potentially harming participants
  • Institutional resistance — The university ethics committee refused his proposal to begin therapeutic work with psilocybin outside the hospital setting
  • Adverse events — A volunteer on psilocybin had a paranoid reaction and fled the hospital; a graduate student was discovered taking drugs with volunteers after hours
  • Buddhist community pressure — His Zen temple pressured him to stop the work, contributing to his departure from the order
  • Personal factors — Family concerns prompted relocation to Canada and the Pacific Northwest

Strassman has been clear that the DEA did not directly shut down his research, though the broader regulatory environment — Schedule I classification of DMT, the two-decade moratorium on psychedelic research that preceded his work, and the extensive bureaucratic requirements — reflects a systemic institutional resistance to this category of consciousness research.

The Theoneurological Model

After the DMT studies concluded, Strassman spent years searching for a theoretical framework that could adequately account for what his volunteers reported. The Buddhist framework he had practiced for two decades proved inadequate — Buddhism generally dismisses visionary content as distraction from meditation practice and does not have a robust framework for encounters with autonomous intelligent entities.

Strassman turned to the Hebrew Bible, where he found striking parallels between the prophetic experiences described in the Old Testament and the reports from his DMT volunteers. The visions of Ezekiel, Moses, Adam, and Daniel — encounters with angels, voices from burning bushes, wheels within wheels, multi-faced beings — bore remarkable similarity to DMT entity encounters.

This led Strassman to develop what he calls the "theoneurological" model, detailed in DMT and the Soul of Prophecy (2014). The core distinction:

  • Neurotheology (the mainstream academic approach) proposes that changes in brain chemistry create the impression of communicating with the divine — the brain generates the experience
  • Theoneurology (Strassman's model) proposes that God communicates with humans via the agency of the brain — DMT, whether naturally produced or ingested, is a critical factor enabling genuine divine or prophetic encounters

In this framework, the pineal gland serves as a biological antenna or transceiver. Under certain conditions — extreme stress, near-death, deep meditation, birth, death — the pineal gland releases DMT in sufficient quantities to shift consciousness into a state where it can receive communications from dimensions or entities that are genuinely external to the individual.

Strassman drew heavily on the medieval Jewish philosopher Maimonides, who proposed sophisticated metaphysical mechanisms for the prophetic experience. The theoneurological model thus bridges neuroscience, pharmacology, and biblical scholarship.

The Pineal Gland Hypothesis

Strassman's most widely discussed (and debated) hypothesis is that the pineal gland produces endogenous DMT and releases it under extraordinary conditions — particularly at birth, death, and during near-death experiences. He proposed this in DMT: The Spirit Molecule (2000) as a speculative but testable hypothesis.

In 2013, researchers at the University of Michigan provided partial verification when they detected DMT in the pineal gland microdialysate of living rodents — the first direct evidence of pineal DMT production in any mammal. Strassman has noted that the gene and enzyme responsible for completing DMT synthesis are active in both the retina and the pineal gland.

However, whether the pineal gland produces DMT in quantities sufficient to produce psychoactive effects in humans remains unconfirmed. This is one of the most actively debated aspects of Strassman's work (see Counterarguments below).

Current Situation

Strassman remains active as an author, speaker, and commentator on psychedelic research. He published The Psychedelic Handbook: A Practical Guide to Psilocybin, LSD, Ketamine, MDMA, and DMT/Ayahuasca in 2022 and My Altered States in 2024. He has expressed measured concern about the current "psychedelic renaissance," cautioning against the commercialization of psychedelic therapy and the loss of the spiritual and ontological dimensions of these experiences in favor of purely clinical applications.

He continues to appear on podcasts and in interviews, including appearances on the Hamilton Morris Podcast (2025), Mind Meld, Modern Psychedelics, and others. His website (rickstrassman.com) remains active.

Strassman has also explored cosmological frameworks for understanding DMT experiences, proposing that DMT may allow consciousness to perceive dark matter or parallel universes — realms of existence that physics acknowledges but that are inaccessible to ordinary perception.

Connection to Deep State / Consciousness Control

The 20-Year Moratorium

The broader context of Strassman's research is inseparable from the deep state's relationship with consciousness. The 20-year gap in psychedelic research (approximately 1970-1990) that preceded his work was not the result of scientific consensus that psychedelics were unworthy of study. It was the result of regulatory and political decisions driven by the same government that had secretly funded MKUltra — which used LSD and other psychoactive compounds for mind control purposes.

The Controlled Substances Act of 1970, which placed DMT and other psychedelics on Schedule I (no accepted medical use, high abuse potential), effectively ended legitimate scientific investigation of substances that the CIA had been covertly researching for decades. The classification was political, not scientific — these substances had shown significant promise in psychiatric research throughout the 1950s and 1960s.

DEA Scheduling and Research Suppression

DMT's Schedule I classification means that any researcher who wants to study it must navigate an extraordinary bureaucratic process involving DEA licensing, FDA approval, institutional review boards, and multiple layers of oversight. Strassman's success in obtaining approval was exceptional — most researchers do not attempt it, and the regulatory burden effectively functions as a research suppression mechanism regardless of whether direct prohibition is the intent.

The fact that Strassman was the first person in over 20 years to receive such approval — during a period when the government's own intelligence agencies had investigated consciousness-altering substances extensively through MKUltra, Artichoke, and related programs — illustrates the asymmetry: the state reserved the right to investigate consciousness-altering substances for its own purposes while prohibiting independent scientific research into the same compounds.

Institutional Resistance at UNM

Strassman's experience at the University of New Mexico demonstrated how institutional structures resist consciousness research even when it is legally permitted. The ethics committee refused his proposal for therapeutic psilocybin work outside the hospital. Administrative obstacles multiplied. Promised colleagues did not materialize. The institutional environment communicated that this research was unwelcome.

What Was Being Suppressed

The significance of Strassman's findings — that a simple, naturally occurring compound can reliably produce encounters with what volunteers describe as autonomous intelligent entities in alternate dimensions — has profound implications for our understanding of consciousness, reality, and the nature of the mind. If DMT provides access to genuine alternate dimensions or entities (rather than mere hallucination), this would fundamentally challenge the materialist paradigm underlying modern science, medicine, and governance.

The suppression of this line of research — whether through active prohibition, regulatory burden, institutional resistance, or cultural stigma — serves interests that benefit from a population that accepts materialist assumptions about consciousness and does not investigate what lies beyond ordinary waking awareness.

The Counterargument

Neurological Explanations

The mainstream neuroscience position holds that DMT experiences, however vivid and consistent, are generated entirely by the brain. The entities, dimensions, and telepathic communications reported by Strassman's volunteers are, according to this view, complex hallucinations produced by DMT's interaction with serotonin receptors (particularly 5-HT2A receptors). The consistency of reports across volunteers may reflect shared neural architecture rather than shared access to an external reality.

The Pineal Gland Debate

Strassman's hypothesis that the pineal gland produces and releases psychoactive quantities of DMT at birth, death, and during near-death experiences remains unproven. While DMT has been detected in rodent pineal tissue (Barker et al., 2013), the concentrations found are far below psychoactive levels. No study has demonstrated that the human pineal gland produces DMT in quantities sufficient to produce the experiences Strassman describes. Some researchers consider the pineal DMT hypothesis to be speculative and not well supported by current evidence.

Lack of Therapeutic Carryover

Strassman himself noted that follow-up interviews with his volunteers one to two years after their DMT sessions found little positive carryover into daily life. The experiences, however profound in the moment, did not reliably produce lasting psychological or spiritual benefit. This contrasts with psilocybin research at Johns Hopkins and other institutions, where lasting positive changes have been documented.

Selection Bias

All of Strassman's volunteers were experienced hallucinogen users. This raises questions about whether their expectations and prior experiences shaped their reports. Subjects familiar with Terence McKenna's descriptions of "machine elves" or with ayahuasca entity encounters may have been primed to interpret their DMT experiences in those terms.

The "Set and Setting" Factor

The clinical hospital environment, the intravenous administration route, and the research context all constitute a "set and setting" that may have influenced the nature of the experiences. The high proportion of "alien abduction"-like reports — subjects strapped to beds, receiving injections, in a clinical environment — may partially reflect the setting being incorporated into the DMT experience.

Academic Reception

Strassman's DMT: The Spirit Molecule received a mixed review in the American Journal of Psychiatry (2002), which acknowledged the rigor of the clinical methodology while expressing skepticism about the metaphysical interpretations.
