Robert Monroe, in Far Journeys (1985), described non-physical "Collectors" positioned around Earth to harvest emotional energy — "loosh" — generated by human suffering, fear, love, grief, and the biological drama of life. The Gnostic tradition independently describes "Archons" — demonic rulers of the material world — who maintain humanity in ignorance and suffering to harvest spiritual energy and prevent escape from the reincarnation cycle.
